Chapter 36

The Sky Mother always gave them tests. How high one could fly, how much weight one could bear, how long to glide. Those that failed plunged to their death. There was no mercy with the Sky Mother, for the skies were no place for the weak. Their people had failed her once before. Faced with a final test, they had not risen to it.

Doomed their people, their race, to servitude and pawns in this game. Yiis knew that and still she had chosen to ally herself with the boy. In an attempt to thwart these creatures who controlled her people, who controlled her. Was that another failure on her part, to accept what was her fate?

She was not sure, but Yiis, Last Queen of the Harpies, had not thought so. Given the opportunity to spit in their controllers’ eyes, she had taken it.

Now she was given another test and Yiis wondered what it really was. Sometimes, the tests by the Sky Mother were deceptive. Were you meant to try flying now or was the test to wait until one's wings were healed? Take too long and you would starve. Fly too soon and your wings would never hold you up but snap instead.

Was this test one like that then?

Yiis could sense Colombia's regard. The Diplomat, her cousin, demanding that she make a decision. To take over, perhaps, the boy's place. Kill him, here and now. She could win accolades with their masters, gain some form of concession. She knew this, instinctively, though she could not remember the details.

Or... be true. Help the boy.

"Orders, my lord?" Braskar, that green-skinned creature.

The map showed the Hero and his compatriot, the Priest, the one who could heal standing there. So many hexes away from Matt. No chance of them coming back anytime soon.

“My lord?” Concern entered his voice.

It was that concern, the way he worried for the orc, a creature that was not even of the same species like her liege that resolved her own thoughts. “Hero Braskar,” Yiis spoke up, making sure her voice was filled with confidence. “Lord Matt has encountered an unexpected problem and was injured while speaking with your opponent’s controller.”

“I thought her ability was safe!”

“Thus the unexpected,” Yiis said. “Colombia will care for him. And we will hasten the production of a Temple.” She paused, leaned forward. “In the meantime, you are to continue the attack. If they desire war, war they will receive.”

A hand moved to the map, touching it and calling forth the details before her. Yes, she could control the kingdoms. The boy had never taken it from her, even his. Of course, he could counteract her orders, she was sure, but she had never made use of it.

Foolish, naïve, all too trusting.

In this case, it worked for them.

“I’ll crush them under my heels. But are you certain Lasya…”

“I am willing to go. Alone, if necessary,” the Priest said. A hesitation, then she added, “If you build the Temple in his town, make sure to put him there when it’s done.
